...almost finished

Activity: I was talking whit my friend Veronica about the last weeks in the school.
A few days ago Vero told me that she really hated the last weeks of the semester because the teachers gave us a lot of exams and homework. She also said that she was thinking in don’t be stressful and only do the necessary, not to do a lot of work. She said is not possible that she didn’t slept well for their jobs and she is tired. She wants to finish these semester as soon as possible.
Reflection: With this kind of exercise we can practice our speaking and tried to speak daily topics like the school. Maybe with this kind of practice we can speak fluently and be better.

with my Neighbors

Around my house, live foreign people. In front of my house live a couple of USA, behind me live a Canadian family and close to the corner live another USA family. I have more neighbors but only for vacations. Just a few persons are from Progreso.
Yesterday I listened screens, voices and laughing in the middle of the night. It was a group of American people because they speak English, I mean, I guess. They got my attention so far. So I decided go out and talked with they for my speaking activity.
One of they asked me: Did you catch that she said? And I answered him…and started the conversation, about the weather in Yucatan that is so different than their country. We talked about my house and the food too.
I think we were talking around one hour. It was so helping to me. I enjoyed the conversation. I hope the next time that they walked closed to my house say hello to me for talking again and help me with my English and I can learning Spanish to these very nice foreign people.

Business letter

INTRODUCTION An acceptance letter is a positive response to either an invitation or a job offer. Its objective is to notify the reader of an affirmative decision. The letter should be kept fairly short. Its scope need only include information that relates to the logistical details of accepting the offer. If you have been offered a job that you intend to accept, write your letter immediately. Remember, you are not the only person that was interviewed. The offer only indicates that you are the employer's "first choice." Delay on your part will communicate a lack of interest and will result in a prospective employer turning to his or her "second choice." In the sample acceptance letter the writer accepts an entry-level position and reiterates specific information previously discussed in the job interview regarding his starting date.

Hurricanes

I read an article in a magazine about tropical cyclone, as also named hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone. This is a natural disaster, is a storm characterized by a low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rain. Tropical cyclones feed on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapour contained in the moist air.
The term "tropical" refers to both geographic origin of these systems, which form almost exclusively in tropical regions of the globe, and their formation in Maritime Tropical air masses. The term "cyclone" refers to such storms' cyclonic nature, with counterclockwise rotation in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise rotation in the Southern Hemisphere. Depending on its location and strength
Something that I really surprised me was that as a result, tropical cyclones help to maintain equilibrium in the Earth's troposphere, and to maintain a relatively stable and warm temperature worldwide.
If the conditions remain favorable, the tropical disturbance intensifies, and can even develop an eye. If the conditions around the system deteriorate or the tropical cyclone makes landfall, the system weakens and eventually dissipates. In spite of this, it is not possible to artificially induce the dissipation of these systems with current technology.
I enjoyed read about this kinds of topics because is a problem close to me and actually we are very exposed and vulnerable to this natural disaster.

Study sheds light on how brain processes languages

I red an article about how the brain process languages. This is a reporter of CNN in January 23, 1998.
Take a look about this interesting process: First, have you ever wondered why it seems harder to learn a second language as an adult than it does to learn one at an earlier age?
Researchers at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center say our brains may process language learning differently as we grow older. While the scientists still have much to learn, brain surgeons already are benefiting from their work.
The Sloan Kettering researchers used a machine called a Functional MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, to map the language centers in the brains of 12 volunteers who speak more than one language.
Some of the volunteers learned a second language as children. Others learned a second language while in high school or college.
In those who learned additional languages early in life, the study indicates the brain processed the languages in the same area. For example, if a yellow area represents the Croatian language, and a red area represents the English language, the study found a large orange area showing an overlap in the way the brain merges the language capabilities.
Scientists still don't know the best time to learn a second language. They hope more studies will answer that question.
But parents seem to believe their children have an easier time learning a second language.
I think this is real because some adults’ person learned English, for example at 30 years old and some kids star to speak English at 3 years old. Amazing, right? Also this report mentioned that the brain used a different area if you learned another language. The brains find it more efficient which is dedicated to the second language. The parents always said that you should to be of use younger. That is the reason that I never stop in my life. Now I´m get accustomed to do a lot of things for learning more and more.

Birthdays and Parties!!

On Thursday was my brother’s birthday. A day before I went to Liverpool to buy a present for him, that he said me a weeks before that he likes it. But when I went the sweater was only in big sizes. And I decided to go to Zara looking for a similar clothes that I sure he likes it.
I was so lucky because I founded a very similar sweater, in small size and the same color, he wanted a red one. But in that moment my little brother said me that he didn’t has a gift too. So, I helped him and I chose another thing. I decided for brown shoes.
The next day, the day for his birthday, my mom and I woke up to my brother singing “Happy Birthday” and we gave him his presents. On night, my family and I went to a restaurant for the official celebration; and then, we ate chocolate cake in my house. We took some photos and then everybody went to sleep.
The next day, on Wednesday, was my friend´s birthday and I ate cake again with him and his family. Today is Freda’s party, she is 12 years old. The next week will be my birthday too; and I know I will be eating cheese cake or another kind. And also, three more friends have birthday in this season. Then came Christmas and New Year and more and more celebrations. So I know I will should to be on a diet; but now it doesn´t matter. I love parties and I love my birthday´s day even though I hate to be older.
In spite of everything, I am exciting and happy because the classes almost finished and holidays are coming.

Type of Banking

Commercial Banks
Commercial or retail Banks are businesses that trade in money. They receive and hold deposits, pay money according to customers’ instructions, lend money, offer investment advice, exchange foreign currencies, and so on. They make a profit from the difference (known as a spread or a margin) between the interest rates they pay to lenders or depositors and those they charge to borrowers. Banks also create credit, because the money to they lend, from their deposits, is generally spent (either on goods or services, or to settle debts), and in this way transferred to another bank account –often by way of a bank transfer or a cheque (check) rather than the use of notes or coins – from where it can be lent to another borrower, and so on. When lending money, bankers have to find a balance between yield and risk, and between liquidity and different maturities.

Movies and more Movies

Recently my mom and I went with frequently at the cinema although she always has things to do. I don’t know why these days she asked me almost every day to go to the movie theater.
First, I think maybe because she wanted to see one movie and we didn’t find it and entered to see another. For example: “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” Last week, we went to the Hollywood cinema and this film was only in the Siglo 21. And when we went to the cinema the schedule never coincided with our time. So, we decided to see another movie. The second time, we designed our schedule and went to see this movie. But the point is that: we went to see a determinate movie and entered to see another different and the next time we saw the chosen one. For this way, we saw one picture more. I hope you understand me.
Only gave you an idea: in two weeks my mom and I have seen around eight movies. Two of them we saw in our house, and the others we went to the cinema. One day, we went with my sister too and saw two pictures in one day in different cinema. First we went to Merida and saw the film at four o’clock and then we went to Progreso and saw another film at seven in the night. It was very funny and a little tired. I don’t suggest you.
But I never mentioned that I don’t have any problem with that, doesn’t matter if is weekend or not. I love to go to the movies, with my mom, my brothers or my friends. And I like every kind of films except scary movies and the boring ones. My favorite genre is romantic comedy.

Laurent Clerc

Would you believe that the first outstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Clerc. He became a friend of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and together they founded America's first school for the deaf.
He was born hearing, but when he was one year old, he fell into a fire. As a result, he lost both his hearing and his sense of smell. The right side of his face was badly burned, and was scarred for his whole life. The sign for his name was even based on the scar.
Meanwhile, in America, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was studying to be a minister when he met a young deaf girl, Alice Cogswell. He was upset to learn that there were no schools for the deaf in America. He was very concerned about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf. Therefore, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed to London, England to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. However, he was unable to get help and he became frustrated. While he was there, he met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to spend three months learning at the Royal Institution for the Deaf, the school where Laurent Clerc was teaching.
Gallaudet accepted the offer, and went to the Royal Institution for the Deaf, where Clerc became his Sign Language teacher. The two worked and studied well together. When the time came for Gallaudet to return to America, he asked Clerc to come with him.

The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took 52 days; however, Clerc and Gallaudet put the time to good use. Clerc studied English, and Gallaudet studied sign language. They discussed the school for the deaf which they planned to open. On the long trip, they had many conversations about education and deafness. The year after they arrived, they founded a school for the deaf in Harford, Connecticut.
At the school, Clerc led a busy life. He taught signs to Principal Gallaudet; he taught the pupils; and he taught hearing men who came to the school to study deaf education. At that time, the state would only pay for each student to stay at the school for five years. Therefore, Clerc had to teach his pupils as much as he could as quickly as possible. Once, Clerc came to Washington, D.C. because he was asked to appear before the Congress of the United States.

In 1819, Clerc married Eliza Crocker Boardman, one of his pupils. They had six children. He retired from teaching in 1858. Although he had intended to return to France, he never did. He died on July 18, 1869 in the United States.

..a lot of homework!!

I have a lot of homework these weeks, and I know I will be had more close to the end of the semester. One of those is a teamwork that I should to submit in two weeks. I need to do a presentation for one of my classes, but I really want to do something different because always is the same in all the groups and I think my classmates and I want to see and to listen something to shake up their ideas.

I was thinking about a video, a video that contains scenes with us (we are six people in the team) and commercials like real news’s program.

First I think in my partners, I think maybe they doesn’t want to do something like that, I mean, to appear in a movie to present in front the teacher and the rest of the class. So, I decided that I will be the reporter. But when I presented my idea to the team, they were exciting with my suggestions and delighted with act in the movie with me.

I’m thinking in scenes on the beach, into the city and in the roads. Our topic is about the environmental culture. Therefore, I think also to carry out an opinion poll will be excellent idea for our homework.

I really expect that the video, wherever happens, the teacher love it. And my team helps me too. I will be doing a good job for my homework these days.

The Princess Diary

Mia Thermopolis abruptly learns that she is a princess and the heir to the principality of Genovia. A socially insecure high school freshman, Mia struggles to achieve self-actualization and normality while coping with her new highly publicized identity. Shocked, she initially resists accepting the role of princess but agrees to learn her royal.
The movie compares the
elements of fantasy and realism with humor.
In this film the family is the primary themes of the novel.
High school freshman Mia Thermopolis thinks she is a freak because she is gangly, and has ugly hair and large feet. Mia tries to improve the lives of animals and protect the environment. She are worrying about achieving self-actualization and improving herself, especially her tendency to lie.
Mia confides her concerns in a journal that her mother gave her. She initially perceives her greatest dilemmas as passing algebra, tolerating her mother dating her algebra teacher, and gaining a boyfriend.
Other than her algebra woes, she is considered intelligent enough to be assigned to the
gifted and talented class which in reality is a study hall. Too much love, very romantic movie but with a message for all the people who thing they are ugly and unusualness. For enjoy with all the family because this movie represent the real value of the family union and communication.

A negotiation breakdown

John Dee imports microwave ovens from Korea and has been working satisfactorily with the same supplier to five years. Recently he travelled to Korea to meet the supplier and negotiate a reimbursement for a shipment of appliances that John´s customers had sent back because of a serious manufacturing defect.

He met the Korean company´s representative Mrs. Han who insisted she could not compensate John financially but would replace the defective appliances. John refused this offer, saying that this gesture would not in itself be sufficient to restore his reputation with his customers.

John was booked on a plane leaving that afternoon and could see little point in continuing the discussion. He was getting more impatient with the apparent lack of progress and stood up angrily and walked out of the discussion. Mrs. Han was embarrassed and did not wish to lose face by asking him to return to the room.

John Dee now buys his microwave from Taiwan at a higher unit price.

About a different man

Last week I saw a movie about Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple. This movie was very interesting because he is one of the entrepreneurs that can go through long periods of bad luck and fall on hard time. He spent 11 years of humiliating failure.
Even that he was the copartner of the trade, their company do a complot against him and the Apple´s workers decided that he was sacked by Apple. With this Jobs lost a lot of money.
But he never saw this experience like a failure because he decided get up and to create another thing and a best one. And this time Pixar had born. After that, the people who sacked Mr. Jobs prayed for his forgive and said to him for comeback to the company.
Now he is established and very happy with his family…
Also, he talked about his experiences and said to the graduated people: the life is a challenge and when a door closed another open for a new chance. So, the suggestion of Mr. Jobs for the people is in a short phrase: Everything in the world happened have a reason, everything happen for a secret reason to be.

Banking

This activity is about the banking vocabulary, I matched up the terms with its definitions. Some words are new for me but the others I know them.
I just wrote down the words that I need find in the dictionary for its definition.

Mortgage: Debt instrument giving conditional ownership of an asset, secured by the asset being financed. The borrower gives the lender a mortgage in exchange for the right to use the property while the mortgage is in effect, and agrees to make regular payments of principal and interest. The mortgage lien is the lender's security interest and is recorded in title documents in public land records. The lien is removed when the debt is paid in full. A mortgage normally involves real estate and is a long-term debt, normally 25 to 30 years, but can be written for much shorter periods.

Overdraft: Amount by which a check exceeds the
Available Balance in a checking account. Also, the negative account balance that results when a depositor writes checks exceeding the account balance. Bank customers who have an overdraft line of credit, called Overdraft Protection can write checks for more than the account balance whenever they want, without fear that their checks will be returned or they will have to pay overdraft check fees for bounced checks. Also called "overdraft privilege" a bounce protection.

Loan: Money advanced to a borrower, to be repaid at a later date, usually with interest. Legally, a loan is a contract between a buyer (the borrower) and a seller (the lender), enforceable under the
Uniform Commercial Code in most states. The terms and conditions for repayment of a loan, including the finance charge or interest rate, are specified in a loan agreement. A loan may be payable on demand (a Demand Loan), in equal monthly installments (an Installment Loan), or they may be good until further notice or due at maturity (a Time Loan).

Winter Vs Summer

Hi everyone! Do you like this weather? I love it! Never sweat! I think is the best part of the year because I have more energy than a normally sunny day. Although for my father´s job this weather is not good I really like these months. The clothes style change.
Mérida is hottest than Progreso. I prefer Progreso because I like cold weather, I love to wear sweaters and scarf though I think is just a justification because here is not necessary to wear scarf, but is nice only for fashion.
Smell good, and every people say Christmas is close. This time, is time for the family and eat a lot of food. Shopping time is close too. My family and I, go together at the mall for buying the presents.
Next week, start our popular party: Ixmatkuil. This kind of party is a tradition and almost all the people of the region and the states near hear come to the “Feria Itmatkuil”. I hope can go this year with my friends and other day with my family.
Maybe my cousins will come for holidays. I think I need worry first for ending my semester and then think in my holidays.

Pro Advice

Description
This activity is based in pictures who someone describes with details about the persons. The speakers describe six professionals who give advice and I should choose one picture that the speaker is. The page has a lot of listening games but I try to choose the best ones for me and practice a good level and vocabulary. In the first picture talk about a police man giving instructions to another person, in other description is a waitress talking with two people who tell them one of the chef suggestion. And more about professional people like a coach, a teacher, etc.

Reflection
In this activity was easier recognizing what is the correct picture, because one word helps me to know what I should choose but I think I need to know all the words use in the description. I did more games activities for practice and be better in listening.

A man, A woman, A horse

Description
This listening give you a few second to heard the description and choose the correct picture. You can make a mistake a try again. Talk about descriptions of images with a woman, a man and a horse. The speaker say the position of the persons and the horse, say who are in the picture and say if the man or the woman are looking to the camera too. I really like this kind of activity because I have problems when someone ask me describe a thing, a person or wherever you want. I never have the right words and this exercise use words that are specific.
Reflection
This activity helps me to train my ear, to practice the words that you use in a description of a picture or a photo. The daily vocabulary that I need heard to use more frequently. I only had one mistake.

Preparing for your future

Résumé and cover letters

First paragraph: (State why you are writing, what position you are applying for, where you heard about the position, and why you would like to work for this company)
Second paragraph: (Discuss the relevance of your education, related activities, and projects to the job in question)
Third paragraph: (Discuss the relevance of your work experience)
Fourth paragraph: (Indicate your desire for a personal interview and your flexibility as to the time and place)

I’m interesting about the job. I heard about the position by the radio. And I would work for your company because I think I can give you an opportunity of development and both can win with this opportunity.

First, I introduce myself: I studied marketing with a post grade in administration. My related activities are: administrate my own
Emphasize my production, marketing and sales experience and give any details that do not show up on his resume.

I think I'm qualifying to the position. I could mention my activities in my last job: I was the responsible for the secretary and her activities and for the job of the production persons. I worked three years in the same company.

I realize that a resume cannot completely convey my background and qualifications. I would therefore welcome the opportunity to meet you in a person to present my self in more detail. I hope to hear from you soon and to be considered for the position of marketing administration.

JOB SEARCH Preparing for your future

Standard Questions Asked during Interviews

These questions can be used during the trial interview, along with questions specific to the job and individual candidate based on that person’s résumé. That’s the reasons that I decided to practice answering these questions like a personal interview in an office with person of the human resources department. You can try too for your future work life.
1. Tell me about yourself
2. How would you describe yourself (your personality)?
3. What would you consider your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
4. What two or three accomplishments have given you greatest satisfaction?
5. How did you choose the career you have chosen, and what have you done to prepare for it?
6. What qualifications do you have to help you succeed in this career?
7. Why did you apply for a job with our company?
8. What do you think it takes to be successful in our company?
9. Where do you see yourself in five years?
10. Why should I hire you?
11. How do you work under pressure? Give me some examples.
12. Are you willing to relocate?
13. What are the three most important things to you in a job?

To my future boss:
Good Morning. My name is Sara and I live in this city since I born.
I am in the perfect age to work in your company. I'm a single woman and have no children. I studied Marketing and International Business in UADY. Then I took a post grade in economy and finances. I speak Spanish, English and Chinese and now I'm learning French. I have facilities for change my residence if the work required, I don’t have problem for doing a business trip.
About my personality I am an original person and creative, I'm responsible, honest and professional. I like to travel around the world and read too.
I consider one of my greatest strengths is my professional history and one of my weaknesses is the failure.
In five years, maybe I will work in this company doing a very good deal with an international airline.
You should hire me because I'm a different person and I want work with you to do something different, I want that this company will be the best and I know I can do that.
You will never be regret.
The three most important things to me in a job are:
- My personal success
- I fell happy with the things that I do, with my partners and the work space.
- Have time to myself.

About Antropology

I read “Symbolic Systems and Meanings”, this lecture talk about the types of symbols and theirs meanings. The main idea, I think is the differences of the traditions in each culture and how the people can take one thing for represent the power, authority or social status.
In India, for example, the family groups believe in totems; these are a kind of animal or bird for special adoration. The people who live in India can´t eat that animal. Is like veneration.
Also, the order of the rooms in the house represents who is the father, who has authority and more. We have a special place to have the meals, a special place to wash the clothes and other room only for the parents. In other cultures everybody sleep in the same bed and eat, take a rest and do your homework also in the same room together. Some cultures believe if you have long hair you are people with honor. In other countries, the most people has short hair and the people who has long hair looks dirty for them or maybe just disagree with the fashion.
I conclusion: I think each country has their social symbols and the rest of the word should respect their selves believes because we are different and free. These symbols maybe represent social status, authority or age; but all together are the identity of the region, culture, or age range.

About my weekend

Hi ! Today I´m going to tell you what I did last weekend.I was part of the staff of SITI. It was a new experience and a very good one but I considered I don´t want repeat it. Because the symposium was too tired and you know that I had to miss classes. The duration of the symposium was three days: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I did assistance and presentations, I delivered awards. I met a lot of people.I think the best experience in the SITI was learning how I can do a project, how can I do when meet a professional person and the most important was: Everybody should follow your personal believes and do your selves responsibilities.Friday was my hard day because I should to be since 7 in the morning until the night just stand up like a model. And I didn´t take a good meals. The last day, was the white party in a restaurant in Progreso beach. My friends and I went to the beach on the Saturday night then it was the conclusion of this program. Everything was beautiful, every people were wearing white clothes and in the midnight we saw ten fire flyers on the sky. Just one detail: close to two a.m. began to rain, but before the raining the weather was perfect.
On Sunday, my parents and I went to a restaurant to have the lunch, near to Chelem on the seashore. I recommend you the restaurant. I ate shrimp and bready fish, very good food. The people who administrated this restaurant are from Canada and USA.
